CollegeAPP Expands Data Modeling Team; Michiel Besseling Named Vice President, Analytics

LOS ANGELES, Calif., January 18, 2022 — CollegeAPP, the proprietary adult education and training data analytics service, announces the appointment of Michiel Besseling as Vice President of Analytics. Besseling brings experience with person-level, hierarchical modeling as well as an understanding of the education ecosystem ranging from community colleges to online and graduate education.
“Technical data analytics skills are vitally important to the service we provide our partners,” said CollegeAPP president Jack MacKenzie. “And yet, equally important is understanding education, understanding adult learners and understanding their challenges. Michiel brings a unique background that checks all those boxes.”
Michiel earned his Master of Science in Data Analytics from Western Governors University in 2020. He earned his degree while teaching advanced math and statistics to the next generation of data scientists at JSerra Catholic and San Clemente High Schools in southern California and operating a private math tutoring service.
"My years of teaching and learning have reinforced my belief that education is the gateway to a happy life. I'm excited to use my knowledge of machine learning and predictive modeling to help schools locate prospective students. A more educated society is a better society,” Besseling said.
Michiel’s education started at Orange Coast Community College, and he finished his Bachelor’s degree in Math with an option for Education from Cal State University at Long Beach.

His fortitude to continue his learning while teaching full time will give him experience and empathy to understand the complicated journey for adult learners. Michiel lives in southern California with his wife, young son and a couple of cats who seem to enjoy participating in Zoom calls with colleagues and clients.
